Charities Need Our Help

A survey was distributed to nearly 500 charities across North Dakota and northwest Minnesota to assess how the COVID-19 crisis has impacted their ability to achieve their organization’s mission. These are the hardships they’re currently facing as of 3/20/20.

How Communities Can Support Charities

Letter to the Region

March 20, 2020

To the most generous region on the planet:

The rapid escalation of the COVID-19 pandemic has created great uncertainty for families, businesses, and nonprofits. If one thing is certain, though, it’s that people in our region will rise to the occasion. We are calling on our communities to come together to ensure health, stability, and hope for a bright future. Now, more than ever, is the time to provide help to all our neighbors who can’t help themselves.

In an effort to determine the greatest needs of our charities, we distributed a survey to nonprofits across North Dakota and northwest Minnesota. More than 230 charities answered questions aimed at assessing how the COVID-19 crisis has impacted their operations and ability to serve the people of our region. Here are some key hardships they’re currently facing:

  • 40% of charities are not able to offer remote work as an option.
  • Nearly half of regional charities have or will cancel a significant fundraising event
  • 80% of charities do not have a plan to replace lost revenue caused by this unexpected crisis.

With the feedback from charities, DMF and Impact Foundation are now developing a COVID-19 operational response plan to help North Dakota and northwest Minnesota charities ensure the continuity of critical services for the populations they serve. We are doing everything we can as a foundation to provide a well-lit path forward for charities through these trying times.

We have repurposed our Giving Hearts Day platform to launch DMFHelpingHearts.org, a COVID-19 Crisis Response Giving platform. This site will serve as an information hub for nonprofits and a channel for fundraising requests. Helping Hearts is a single website where charities can share their story of how COVID-19 has impacted their organization, and donors can conveniently donate directly to multiple charities on a trusted platform. Donors can visit DMFHelpingHearts.org to learn more and support their favorite charities during this difficult time.

We have also created a DMF/Impact COVID-19 Critical Services Fund to raise substantial dollars and ensure the stability of North Dakota and northwest Minnesota charities providing safety-net health and social service needs. Donations to this fund can be made at DMFHelpingHearts.org.

We are developing new online trainings and launching an e-newsletter with practical, timely information that will help charities better weather this storm.

Alongside other foundations, we will continue to assess the needs of our regional nonprofits and help wherever possible. Charities provide invaluable services to our communities such as: helping the most vulnerable among us meet basic needs such as food, housing, and mental health services — not to mention employing thousands of our friends and neighbors. We need our nonprofits more than ever, and more than ever, they need us.
